Also, an ebook discount that high seems unusual. Checking for another recent book: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rule-34-ebook/dp/B00550O1FK the price differential seems more reasonable there....

You’re only renting if you go with Amazon/Kindle. If buy an epub then you have a file that you can use anywhere you like, and that cannot be taken away from you. This is the equivalent of buying an mp3...

DRM is an optional part of the EPUB standard so you could end up in the same position as a Kindle owner which all depends on your publisher.
