I only have time for a short reply right now. Let me thus say: First, assault can be strictly verbal. That's why battery is a separate crime. So where I would draw a line on acceptability may be different from...

Of course O'Reilly leave themselves wiggle room to favor whoever is popular; to do otherwise would be foolish. That doesn't change the fact that "sex", in itself, is in fact listed forbidden from any presentation. As for the rest ......

Sawyer: I understand the difference perfectly well. Evidence: Do I have a reputation as a sexist pig? No. Has there been lots of opportunity for me to show it, if I were? Yes. So, there you go. I have a...

Chip: I have no problem with suffering whatever consequences my words may bring, due to whatever offence they may cause Aristotle: Including the consequence of having driven off (or discouraged from coming by) people that would have enriched the community?...

So you are saying they would throw a speaker out of the conference for making a remark like Larry’s. Is that right? I'm not saying that. O'Reilly is....

If someone suggested to equate any quality of code available on CPAN to penis size, I know I would feel just as uncomfortable about that. I'd be amused, actually, by how appropriate it is. Geeks are jocks, just on a...

PS: SawyerX, your response is essentially that you find my argument non-credible. Well, there's not much I can do about that. I wrote from the heart....

White knights and express-offense-as-control are the problems here, not sex. Sex is merely an easy target, a stalking horse. Soon must come every other topic that anyone finds uncomfortable. Why would anyone think otherwise? Has any censoring body been satisfied...

I fear for the joy of Perl when the joy of writing and talking about it is circumscribed by constant pandering to the easily offended. Hell, I don't have to _fear_ for it. I experience its loss already. Oh, wait,...

Thanks, Tina. That confirms that the Code says what I expected it says, contrary to what Chip claimed it says, i.e. that any mention of sex whatsoever is completely verboten at OSCON, to the point that a remark like Larry’s would lead to expulsion. How does that follow from language that leaves as much room for slack as “Speakers and exhibitors should use good judgment; if we hear complaints and we think they are warranted, you may not be invited back”?

Chip: so how is a Code like this the first step of an escalation toward the gagging and muting of the free expre…

Chip: I do not know you, so I can't say whether you're sexist or not. I can say, however, that you are quite arrogant and are either incapable of understanding some simple things or refuse to concede. I assume the latter. You're trying to protect something that isn't under attack because you don't want to admit that someone actually did something wrong that we shouldn't really do.

People don't really understand what censorship is. Censorship only applies when *relevant* information is denied. If, for example, you want to go on a W3C discussion forum on CSS 3 and speak about the prime…

That's an interesting point (and I'm not being cynical), but I think there are some interesting counter-points:
    2. Censoring, again, is not really the proper term. Censoring is only done with regard to relevant information. We should not be using the term so freely without proper reason. Censoring is shutting up someone because we don't …

I apologize for such lengthy replies, but I really feel like I have to say another thing.

You said that "words that offend" are the only thing left to eliminate. Even if we're talking about words, I think it's important to note that words become actions. Words dictate a state of mind, a state of acceptable thought and behavior, and later on bring things to action.

If it's okay to degrade people online just because they're female (or Asian), it would be okay to do it on IRC, it would be okay to do it at conferences, first in words and later in action. Soon enough we'll either …

I'm happy we have similar values of no tolerance for intimidation, stalking and the likes. We should remember that many (or even most) forms of assault (especially when it comes to women who do not enjoy an understanding of what assault can be, unlike children for example) are in fact legal in most countries. This means we can't count on what is defined legal or not.

Perhaps this wasn't the best (or even a right) example of sexism, but sexism could also be defined differently. The fact that the person sexualized software has brought up a sexist factor and context in that situation. I…
