It's been some time since the last update on the progress.

A few weeks ago we set the new dates which is the weekend of 13th and 14th of October.

Stockholm is usually quite beautiful during early october and if weather permits I'm hoping that we can arrange a relaxing trip out to the archipelago before or after the workshop.

I'm happy that Damian Conway will be visiting the workshop this year to talk about regex debugging and will also provide training the days following the workshop thru our sponsor Init AB. Other speakers that are accepted so far are Jonas Nielsen who will present how to run Perl on Stackato and Ulrich Wisser on perlcritic.

But to make this workshop as good as NPW usually is we need you to attend and preferably also give a presentation.

For more information and to register please visit out site at http://www.perlworkshop.se

Stockholm Perl Mongers and our fellow Nordic Perl Mongers arranges the annual Nordic Perl Workshop in Stockholm, Sweden in the beginning of the summer (late may / early june). This is the third time the workshop is arranged in Stockholm and the 10th time
in total.

Nordic Perl Workshop is a workshop for the community by the community and we want you to submit interesting and inspiring presentations in order to make the workshop successful. Talk lengths are the usual 20 and 40 minutes but we might consider
longer ones if motivated. Any subject is welcome as long as it's related to Perl somehow - from algorithms for social graphing and web-technologies to Perl5 core optimizations and language implementation targeting the Parrot VM. To submit a talk either do
it online on the workshop website[1] or to claes at surfar.nu. If submitting via email please prefix the subject with [NPW].

Please submit talks no later than Monday 30th of April. Accepted speakers will be notified Friday 4th of May.

Apart from speakers the workshop also requires eager participants. Workshop fee is 500 SEK (~ 55 EUR) and there's a reduced fee at 250 SEK (~ 28 EUR) for students. This includes admission to the workshop and coffee. Registration is done via the website[1] which uses ACT so if you have attended a previous workshop registration is dead simple. Workshop price will hopefully be lower when we secure sponsors.

[1] Website is not online yet but we're working on it really hard. The
URL is as always http://www.perlworkshop.dk/

Important dates to remember:

April 30th - Deadline for talk submission
Fri 4th - Speakers will be notified
late may / early june - Workshop!

Hope to see you in Stockholm.

After spending way to much time away from Perl lately I found myself happily at the Nordic Perl Workshop 2011 event that occurred in Malmö, Sweden this weekend. Organizers this time were Jonathan Worthington and Carl Masäk - both Perl6/Rakudo hackers extraordinaire. They and several other speakers both local and from the new world gave a variety of presentations ranging from parsers to message queues to why well structued documentation matters. And as usual there were also a few lightning talks (more about mine a bit down).

I've been going to Perl conferences the past 10 years or so and personally these gatherings are to meet old friends and new friends which can give me inspiration and ideas. Getting a face on an IRC nick adds a lot of value.

What I like about Perl workshops and conferences is that there's a very social and friendly feeling over them. There's usually no rockstar or diva behavior from the speakers. I suppose this is mostly because pretty much all Perl gathering such as ours are community driven now-days . When there's little (or no) money involved the "high profile" speakers are there because they want to and not because someone paid them to be and I believe this makes it much better for the speaker/audience interaction and takes away some of that nervousness some people may feel when talking to a speaker, perl5/parrot/rakudo/etc core-hacker or CPAN author.

Somehow these gatherings also seem to result in a bunch of interesting projects or nice hacks when people who usually don't interact come together and exchange thoughts on topics they'd normally not talk about. My little hack this weekend was Runops::Recorder and by giving a lightning talk about it I got some really valuable input it'll progress in ways that I never would have thought of myself.

Runops::Recorder is a replacement runops-loop for Perl that'll save whatever is done to a file which you can later playback to inspect the run. Currently it just records the file and lineno when the next statement is executed but in the future it should save changes to variables and so forth. It's on CPAN as Runops::Recorder if you want to try it out. (Danger! Danger Will Robinson! BETA SOFTWARE WARNING). Hopefully I've had a chance to hack more on it until YAPC::Europe in Latvia and can then do a more extensive lightning talk on it.

Oh, and here's some pictures from NPW 2011: http://www.flickr.com/photos/39538458@N03/sets/72157626989431116/

This concludes my first post here on blogs.perl.org and thank you for reading.

Until later,
Claes
