    Thank you for posting these clear directions. Github does offer advantages, but getting started with it is not always obvious. I know I've had to struggle a lot, and clear directions, including the workflow, will be a big help for...
  • Commented on A Perl CMS for the Masses, Part II
    Ironic isn't it that I'm running my blog, with many things Perly on it, in PHP isn't it? I think the improvement and release of the modernized v8 is a great idea, and hope you can get some traction on...
  • Commented on Watch the secret YAPC::NA live
    The issue with just doing the thing and not talking about it is that the crowd of people who are doing it will shrink. There's no reason a language as heavily used as Perl had only 300 people at the...
  • Commented on XS, Enough Said
    I'm sorry to hear that book has gone out of print, because it was the best resource out there. Your description of XS is pretty good; murky, hard to figure out, and not clearly explained. It's all C preprocessor macros;...

    http://www.yapc.org/ isn't even living in 2014, YAPC::NA and YAPC:EU 2013 are still coming.

    I have the book. It is helpful as you say, but you're right that it's still a steep learning curve, especially to figure out why your project is segfaulting inside the perl interpreter.

    It helps to build and use a perl interpreter built with debugging.

    I also use Inline:: to make my life much easier. Usually, I can get away with Inline, C, and some typemaps.

    Because the connection between perl and C land can be so tedious, you have a very very strong incentive to think hard about getting the interface to a minimum. For me, this usually means the compiled side having a…

    I understand the frustration, and I agree that the communication channels have been sub-optimal. No arguing there.

    However, I think we should also take a long, deep breath, and try to veer the discussion toward what can we do to improve the situation. For most (if not all) of the organizers, YAPC is a labor of love. And labor is the right word there -- it's a long, arduous, exhausting, unglorious process that end in a big final week-long push. Personally, I have no doubt that everybody involved honestly did gave their all. But life, and things, and then more life, happened. And as Ki…

    Most of the arguments for using GitHub apply equally to any other good hosted git based service. The advantage GitHub has over its competitors is that it is the most popular, and most CPAN authors already have accounts there.

    Before I move my modules to github, I would like to hear what the people who operate the CPANTesters and CPAN and manage its software, and the two indexing sites think.

    Also, don't forget to add a link to your Github account from your MetaCPAN profile. This will help potential contributors to find your repositories even if you forgot to put the link in META.yml/json.
