These are the basic elements of Marketing.

The four elements of marketing are often enumerated as Product, Price, Place, and Promotion.

But you should also think about the other side. What does the customer want, why do they want it, and how do they want to receive it? These answers often have nothing to do with the stated goals or tasks. For example, many want to be part of the "cool" community, so obvious benefits such as speed and flexibility have no bearing on the decision. The "benefit" isn't what we think, but what they reveal they think.

These questions will have different answers based on market segments. You don't answer the questions just once. You are continually adapting several sets of answers on changing conditions and desires.

And, for the most part, I've found that the revealed benefit is that the lowest-skilled person on the team doesn't complain about it. Perl has a tough row to hoe there.
