Perl 5 Porters Mailing List Summary: February 15th-29th

Hey everyone,

I apologize for skipping last week. Following is the p5p (Perl 5 Porters) mailing list summary for the past two weeks. Enjoy!

Leaving Android

I originally wrote a very long post about this but somehow it wasn't probably saved while restarting so you'll have the benefit of a shorter version.

I've decided to stop focusing on Perl for Android for now. This is not to say I'll never get back to it, but that I definitely won't be involved with it in the near future.

I assume many are wondering about the current status of Perl on Android. Starting with "there is Perl for Android already" and ending with "it probably isn't the Perl you wish you had" seems like a good summarize. There is a patched-but-not-documented Perl 5.1…

Slides from YAPC::EU 2010 - When Perl Met Android

At YAPC::EU 2010, amongst all the talks I've attended and people I've met, I also gave a talk myself.

The talk was titled "When Perl Met Android" and discussed the Android operating system for mobile devices and the SL4A project and how to use it to run Perl on your phone.

You can find the slides right here. Hopefully I'll be able to cut the screencast to parts and upload to youtube or presentingperl.org - or both. Once that happens, I'll post links here as well.…

Is it just me?

My Perl Android talk was accepted to YAPC::EU 2010 (!!!!) and I want to book the room reservation for my girlfriend and I.

Unfortunately, the hotel (MyHotel - where the conference is taking place) only accepts the credit card details via Email. I've suggested simply calling them and - once I've verified that I'm speaking to the right person - give the details via phone.

However, they insist on getting it via Email. They even suggesting sending two emails, one with half the details, the other with the rest of the details.

Now.. is it just me or is sending it via Email c…

When Perl Met Android

I officially submitted a talk to YAPC::EU (at the appropriate time, of course) this August.

This will be my first YAPC and I'm very excited. I haven't purchased the tickets yet and it's a bit troubling that I have to make all the arrangements before knowing whether the talk is accepted, since I don't know what to ask $work to sponsor - I hope I won't miss out on room vacancy or flights.

My girlfriend (ferret) will probably be accompanying me. Considering last time we went abroad we stayed in a squat and went to protests/shows/squats, I hope she'll enjoy the tour in Pisa.

Perl on Android, progressing...

First, the meeting:

I arrived a bit late but hadn't missed much. Gabor was in the middle of explaining the benefits of getting Perl on Android. He went over a lot of API examples, showing code and explaining and doing a damn goo job at it!

After that, I tried to explain how to install the Android emulator on a Linux machine, configure it and run it. My slides weren't displaying properly on the projector so it was annoying to explain and probably harder to understand.

Then Shmuel went over perl512delta and explained to us the bigger differences and their implications. H…

Perl, Dancer, Android, Haifa.pm!

A few days ago Shmuel Fomberg (who organizes Haifa.pm) wrote in the Israel.pm mailing list: "Sawyer is doing so many interesting things currently, that it is ridicules. Sawyer, please take a long vacation to let us all catch up!".

While this truly flatters me, I reckon that's how I think of a lot of other developers (and I'll refrain from the usual name-dropping I'm accustomed to). Whatever I play with is always minimal in comparison to the stuff I see in the Perl community. This includes both Devel::Declare and ="http…

TelFOSS Meeting Review + Slides

Yesterday we had another Tel Aviv Free and Open Source Software meeting.

The meeting took place at a new venue provided by Amir. The venue was Shenkar engineering and design school in Ramat Gan (which is like an extension of Tel Aviv - so it's cool :)

A lot of people came to the meeting, and it was very nice to see so many new faces. This time we had a review of "Programming Pearls" which Shlomi Fish gave, followed by a lecture on Source Code Management systems (also called Version Control Systems) given by me.

It was a refreshing experience to speak of something that …
