London Perl Workshop: Status Update & 2023

Hello all. It's been a while. As you may have guessed there will not be a workshop this year. We spoke about organising one but the uncertainty around restrictions, along with other organisational constraints, resulted in our decision not to.

Of course, we would like to hold a workshop in 2023 and want to take this moment to solicit feedback on the previous (2019) one and suggestions for next year. The main questions are thus:

  • Venue: We thought David Game College was a great one, should we use it again?
  • Dates: Is October/November optimal or would you prefer earlier in the year? Is the weekend better than on weekdays?
  • Length: LPW has mostly been a single day with multiple tracks, would you prefer a two day event with fewer tracks?
  • Socials: If we held the workshop over the summer we would have more options [to have outdoor style pre/event/post socials in places other than pubs]. What kind of social events do you prefer?
  • Swag: We know people like swag, but it's expensive and an environmental issue. We would prefer to reduce it. Thoughts?

If you have any thoughts on any of the above please let us know. You can leave feedback here in the comments, on reddit, or email us: organisers@londonperlworkshop.org. We would like to start planning next year's event early. Get in touch.

Thanks for your work on this! I've missed the LPW dearly, and it will be great to be able to attend again.

I thought the previous one on 2019 worked well, and I would not have thought about making any changes to it if you had not mentioned the possibility of sunnier socials during warmer months. But this is not a strong preference either way.

Swag-wise, even though I love and still use my LPW 2019 hoodie, I agree with reducing it. I know I could do without, but maybe offering some things on demand (= they only get made / printed if wanted) is a possibility?

Regardless, it will be great to be able to meet in person again.

-> Yes

-> Yes for Oct/Nov and weekend

-> Fun but expensive for non-London people, they'd have to stay over.

-> Prefer 'other than pubs' anyway excludes/discourages Muslims and women (too blokey) for example

Swag: We know people like swag, but it's expensive and an environmental issue. We would prefer to reduce it. Thoughts?

-> No swag, except maybe t-shirt? I hate all the little bags etc.

Hello!

My opinions:

Venue: I have no particular preference.
Dates: Autumn (October/November) is optimal in my opinion. I'd say weekdays, or maybe fri+sat if it's going to be across 2 days... but also full weekend or full weekdays would do
Length: 2 days
Socials: Since I said Autumn, pubs/dinner will be fine.
Swag: I've got tons of Perl-related t-shirt, and I'm sure most of the others attendees are in the same situation. I wouldn't need another t-shirt or other swag at all. Maybe we can think of something not obvious, useful, and somewhat environmentally friendly... just because it's nice to have something.
