A Tale of Two YAPC's
This year the Send-A-Newbie fund will send an attendee to two different YAPCs. We were asked in early 2014 if we could sponsor an attendee to go to YAPC Asia this year instead of YAPC::EU as it made more sense for the attendee. We agreed so we have split the available funds across the two events.
For YAPC::EU in Sofia, Bulgaria we will be sending Upasana Shukla. Upasana is a Perl programmer who firmly believes in Open Source, she is sponsored by a number of organisations to do work within the community. Last year Upasana worked as part of the Gnome Outreach programme on Moose.
"YAPC::EU will not only be my first Perl conference, but technical conference as well, so I'm wildly excited about it. Thanks to Enlightened Perl Organization, The Perl Foundation and The GNOME Foundation for sponsoring my travels."
We will be asking Wendy an Enlightened Perl member to introduce Upasana to more members of the community and get her involved as part of our commitment to our SANs
To YAPC::Asia in Tokyo, Japan we will be sending Pattawan Kaewduangdee who is a member of the newly formed Bangkok Perl Mongers the first Perl Monger group in Thailand. Pattawan hosted the first ever Perl Mongers event in Thailand.
Pattawan got started with Perl from her professional career due to my first job. I found that I have been impressed from Perl and Open Source community.
Pattawan is now an intern in The Outreach Program for Women in sponsorship of The Perl Foundation where she is working full time on MetaCPAN.
"I want to a join a Perl conference to get some ideas that I could bring back to set up a Perl conference or meet up in Thailand since Perl in Thailand isn’t so much well known and nobody experienced any Perl conference before. I think I could take this opportunity to publicize The Outreach Program for Women in sponsorship of The Perl Foundation which is obviously seen that we don’t have much interns or alumnus in this such a great program that I’m participating and hopefully it can inspire any other women to participate in next round."We will be asking Ribasushi, an Enlightened Perl member, to introduce Pattawan to more members of the community and get her involved as part of our commitment to our SANs
Sounds like excellent choices have been made.
